Jim Allen has over 70 years’ experience in many forms of fishing including:
• Whitebaiting
• Set netting
• Long lining
• Trolling
• Surfcasting
• Rod fishing & hand lining of all kinds

Fishing has been a love of Jim’s life that has taken him from just an interest to an income, from commercial fishing to a Sunday afternoon fun activity with his family.

He has written this book to impart just a small fraction of his knowledge to others, both adults and children, so they can get as much enjoyment from fishing as he has had. It is for adults and older children, and covers the basics of equipment, setting up and techniques, without it costing too much, and how to read the wind, moon and tides; for people who would like to go fishing but are on a limited budget, for people who know nothing about fishing but would like to try.

Most of the literature and material available seems to be aimed at the more affluent reader or seeker of information. There is very little "basic stuff", so Jim is trying to fill that gap and encourage more people to go out and enjoy fishing. The more knowledge you have, the more enjoyment you will get.

The information in Part 1 is knowledge that can be learnt from any good tackle shop. As you go on to Parts 2 and 3, you’ll find a lot of the wisdom gained has been learnt by experience, over many years, by people like Jim, and is not widely known. By the time you reach the end of the book, you will have the know-how to catch fish and knowledge of the skills required – and it won’t cost much.

There are pages at the end for ‘Personal Notes’. You may want to use these pages as you go through. There is also a form you can photocopy to use for your own fishing records.

Reviews

This is a great little book. It is so easy to understand. I've bought a copy for all my grandsons. Barbara M.

On a recent holiday in NZ I had the pleasure of spending some time with Jim out fishing in his boat. He sure knows his stuff. On the way out (to the secret spot) I listened to him talk about the different ways of rigging the lines, different locations to go for certain fish, and the types of fish we could expect to catch. This knowledge proved to be very much correct when we reached our destination. We ended up pulling up fish after fish on our lines, and had the best time ... If only I had that knowledge to do the same here in Brisbane. This book will be invaluable to NZ fishermen. Gary M.
